long years of service, loyalty, and absolute discretion it appears secrets are about to spill When the celebrated Mina is accused of partaking in some unethical business transactions in order to profit for herself Christine has to ask herself how far she is willing to go to protect Mina Part psychological thriller part court room drama and totally entertaining I ll admit that it is a slow burn of a book but I find Renee Knights writing so engaging that it didn t take away from this novel I had no idea before reading this how cutthroat the supermarket industry is Another point goes to the author for writing a realistic thriller one where suspension of disbelief is not required You know all the while that the story is leading up to something big and Renee Knight does not disappoint years The book opens with Christine, who moved to a different location, and she starts to tell the story from the beginning We don t know why she s telling, what she s going to do as a result of these There lies the mystery The rest of the book, till the very end is kind of a diary of Christine telling herself how their relationship with Mina progressed and how she became attached to her even a partner in crime In my opinion this part was very long, very dialogue based I had to skim read some parts That s why I would recommend you this book if only you like books that are in diary style, where events progress very slowly I gave this book 3 stars for 2 main reasons 1 It was too long for what it was definitely.2 I really don t think the writer developed the characters enough for us to believe and understand why they are who they are You don t become a Mina type out of the blue Or even so, what was Christine s motivation when she had a perfectly normal childhood and a happy current marriage It didn t make sense and this was lacking Other than that, I think the writer made a very good research The writing was decent But, I wish it was better paced, and thrilling Thanks a lot to half of the book features the relationship between Christine and her employer Mina the women at the heart of the story, and how the latter represents an unhealthy influence on our protagonist, who is oblivious of the danger that her employer represents. The 2nd half is divided into a courtroom drama, and the aftermath of Christine s coming to terms with the world she was actually living in, and how it led her to end up in her current ordeal.I felt so invested in Christine s character, possibly because of the elusiveness that seems to characterize her She is loyal to her employer, she knows all the jaw dropping secrets that Mina confides in her, and she will sacrifice everything in order to keep them The writing is almost hypnotizing it grips you wholly and doesn t let go.There s a major plus to Christine s character as we get to see the way she thinks and acts, all of this is attempted to be justified in a way where we re taken back to her childhood so that we witness the traumatizing events that happened to her during that time of her life However, the nature vs nurture aspect wasn t quite thoroughly explained when it came to the main heroines, and I was longing for that during the whole book because I especially needed to understand Christine s behavior Why does she act feel the way that she does in the present day Other than that, I loved this book, and I think the ending was incredible, unpredictable and clever PS An animal was ill treated by one of the characters in one brief paragraph I felt like that was such an unnecessary appalling event to include in un lavoro vissuto come una missione, un occupazione che diviene ossessione e cancella tutto ci che di importante riempie la vita non si vede nulla se non il proprio capo, in questo caso l affascinante e decisa Mina, si pronti a tutto pur di rendere meno complicata e il pi lineare possibile la quotidianit di chi ci paga lo stipendio e sembra voler guadagnare stima e affetto con sporadici gesti di benevolenza. Narrato come un lungo flusso di coscienza dalla voce di Christine, ripercorriamo come davanti ad un album dei ricordi l inizio del legame tra takes over the family business when her father steps down Christine is working very long hours, she is a pleaser and is anxious to make herself indispensable to Mina, catering to her every whim and need, sometimes anticipating needs and wants before they are even articulated Mina, on the other hand, is incredibly ambitious, narcissistic, manipulative, and knows how to get what she wants from those around her She turns the business around to make it profitable, not caring whose toes she treads on, losing long highly regarded suppliers in the process, and turning herself into a media star At the start of the book, Christine is in a location only known to us as The Laurels, we don t know where or what type of location this is She tells us the story in diary form, recapping events that happened during her 18 years of employment with Mina In trying to make herself indispensable to Mina, Christine often pre empts Mina s needs, taking tasks upon herself without being asked and eventually forgets herself and her own needs and her family s needs over that time She is enthralled, over awed and utterly captivated by Mina She will do anything for Mina, paying attention to Mina s children in boarding school than her own daughter Angelica, in an effort to keep in Mina s good books Praise and acceptance from Mina is what keeps Christine going so when Mina asks Christine to do something for her, Christine, in her blind loyalty, doesn t think twice with disastrous implications for them all I really enjoyed this character driven book It is clear that Christine has grown up without a mother, her eagerness to please stemming from her own self worth issues She is a people pleaser and therefore allowing Mina to take advantage of her, She can t say no to Mina and can t stand the thought that Mina might be displeased with her She is so captivated by and eager to please Mina that she looks on her not only as a friend but also as family Mina, clearly manipulative, takes advantage of Christine to her own gain, reinforcing Christine s beliefs that they are than colleagues and Christine depends on Mina s approval for validation However, the clearly defined lines and boundaries between employer and employee are blurred driving Christine to, quite probably, an eventual breakdown There is a good twist at the end of the book, which wasn t expected at all My only criticism is that the book is overly long and could have been exciting and dramatic had it been cut back a little, and for that reason I am giving The Secretary 4 5 flag Like see review Nov 18, 2018 position She s offered a job working for the second in command at Appleton grocery s administration Christine snaps up the job We get to watch as she smoothly fits into Mina Appleton s work and personal lives, making herself nearly indispensable as Mina works her way up the corporate ladder But is she indispensable When after many years of working for Mina Appleton, Christine, Mina, and Mina s driver, Dave, all wind up in a court proceeding During the trial, Christine seems to change That change have consequences.I thought this was a very good story, but rather predictable through much of it I ll be honest I didn t like the characters very well I found Christine to be a very weak woman, willing to sacrifice her marriage and her child for her job Mina, despite her false facade of friendliness and compassion, always came across, to me, as a greedy, grasping viper.I can t say that this is a book that left me feeling good about much of anything It s a sad commentary on the shallowness of people s lives, the desire to feel better than those around you And greed In the end, for both women, it s all about greed, in one way or another, about which one will receive the most attention SPOILER WARNING view spoiler This book includes a scene of suicide It also includes cruelty and perjury hide spoiler I won an ARC of this book in a giveaway flag Like see review Jan 28, 2019 Christine moves up the ladder of command to personal assistant to the very ambitious Mina. But moving up that ladder also brings with it an increase in work load and responsibility But how far does dedication to your employer and job really go Christine has been witness to everything that goes on in the office and has also been witness to most things in Mina s private life so discretion has been of the book is courtroom drama as the story unfolds oh how the women find themselves in that court room alongside Mina s driver Dave.I don t want to say too much plot wise for fear of giving anything away so you will just have to read the book for yourselves This is a very charter driven book and I m not sure I liked either of the women As I said it is a bit of a slow burner but as the book goes along the pace picks up ending in a twisted, unexpected ending Some plot twists you might see coming but not that bit A really good character driven psychological thriller that I wouldn t hesitate to describes her slow awakening and eventually ruthless reaction Several alerts show that Christine is following a dangerous path into dependence and it is amazing to see how she drowned in this game of power, between her own acceptance and the result of her boss manipulation She bets everything she owns on her job and the reader quickly understands that there will be no happy ending. It is mainly about dependence, obsession, manipulation and delusion The final question is Was it worth it And what about justice and revenge flag Like see review Jan 14, 2019 Gem rated it it was ok review of Marti rated it liked it A psychological thriller unlike any we have seen before I enjoyed the book even though I did not find either of the main characters terribly sympathetic Maybe I am biased, having had worked as an executive secretary for almost 40 years, but I would not have continued in that kind of relationship between boss and employee that was unbalanced and disrespectful My feelings only though The book was suspenseful and well written Gotta watch those quiet ones flag Like see review Oct 18, 2018 Julie added it wow this book was good and scary good Its a commentary on who really
